There was a part of this series where Arthur Dent was trapped on a planet (which turned out to be earth) with a crashed space ship full of useless idiots who were purposefully exhiled by the population of some other planet. The decide to set up an economy and make leaves the official currency. So everyone is rich since there are plenty of trees around. Until of course inflation runs rampant and everyone is using massive amounts of leaves to buy everything, then they decide to burn all the trees in order to make their existing leaves more valuable.

OK, it was ridiculous, but the lesson for inflation is there. The US can't keep printing money without causing some serious problems down the line.
